Dany correcting the positioning of the INT marker stones. He had been
through here two weeks earlier and noticed that kids had moved the
stones to be used as goal markers in their game of football, so he had
to return them to the correct place. For some reason he placed them
marking a well used path instead of the real INT route, this resulted
in pangs of guilty conscience lasting all this time. See the relief on
his face!

Climbing to the Israelite
Citadel. During the period of the kingdoms of Israel and Judah
(10th-6th
centuries BCE), successive citadels were built on the hill of Arad as
part of a series of fortifications protecting the trade routes in the
Negev and the southern border of the kingdom against marauding nomads.
עולים אל המצודה. החלק העליון של העיר הקדומה ערד מכונה "
תל המצודות",
וראשיתו בתקופה הישראלית (החלה ב- 1,200 לפני סה"נ). במקום הוקמו במהלך
השנים מספר מצודות, זו על חורבותיה של קודמתה. המצודות הוקפו בחומה חזקה.

Near the west wall of the
citadel was this water hole connected but a covered channel to the
reservoir inside the citadel. The path we took was probably used by the
water bearers who brought water from the deep well below up here
to the citadel

Dany told us about the citadels here and one important finding starting
at level 11 but cancelled at level 8 - An Israelite temple which is the
only one known outside of Jerusalem. It was part of the first Israelite
citadel there and served as a roadside temple for travelers, merchants
and the garrison of the citadel. This temple was destroyed, apparently
as a result of the religious reforms of Hezekiah, King of Judah, at the
end of the 8th century BCE. The temple comprised three rooms along an
east-west axis: ulam (entrance hall), heichal (main hall), and dvir
(holy-of-holies) -
